The following is taken from the PA Breast Cancer Coalition Newsletter, Fall 2005 issue.
The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the National Cancer Institute urge women to begin getting annual mammograms at the age of 40. In Pennsylvania, however, free mammograms are only provided to women over 50 years of age. Knowing the devastating stories of women diagnosed with late stage breast cancer who die needlessly, the PBCC went into action and asked Representative George Kenney, Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee, to address this issue. He answered our request by sponsoring House Bill 1606: The Women’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Screening Act, which provides for free mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women between the ages of 40 and 49. The House passed HB 1606, sending the bill to the Senate for its vote. Now, the PBCC is working to ensure that this legislation is passed through the Senate quickly, giving more women a life-saving opportunity for early detection and treatment. To do this, we need your help! Please follow these four steps. We need you to contact your State Senator now! We need you to lead the fight against breast cancer and help us in our mission of finding a cure now…so our daughters won’t have to! ©
1. Contact your State Senator at 1-717-787-2121 or at www.pasen.gov. If you do not know who your State Senator is, go to www.legis.state.pa.us -- Use box in upper-right hand corner labeled “Find Members By” – Enter your zip code to get the senator and representative for your area, with contact information. |
